Slaugtherhouse Press Release:

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Slaughterhouse announced today the details of the group’s new tour as well as confirmed that the title of their forthcoming Shady Records/Interscope album debut will be welcome to: OUR HOUSE. Executive produced by Eminem, welcome to: OUR HOUSE, to be released May 15, 2012, will be the second album from the creative collaboration of Crooked I, Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz and Royce da 5′9″. New music will be made available next week for fans to get their first taste of what promises to be one of the most anticipated and explosive albums of the year.

The group will also conduct a live video chat, moderated by Elliot Wilson from Rap Radar (http://www.rapradar.com), on Thursday, January 26th at 6:00pm PST (9:00pm EST) on www.slaughterhouseweb.com where fans will be able to submit questions in real time.

Brash and outspoken, bringing together the East Coast, West Coast and Detroit in the middle, Slaughterhouse issued a self-titled EP last year and was featured on “Loud Noises” on the gold-certified, #1-charting Billboard album Hell: The Sequel from Bad Meets Evil, the collaboration between Royce and Eminem. During the past year, the quartet has also been featured with Ludacris, Yelawolf, Travis Barker and T.I., among others.

Slaughterhouse was previously heard on “Session One,” a bonus track on Eminem’s 2010 blockbuster Recovery album, following their debut, indie-issued album in 2009. Widely acclaimed as individual artists, the group formed in late 2008 after Crooked I from Long Beach, CA, Joell Ortiz from Brooklyn, NY and Royce da 5′9″ from Detroit appeared on “Slaughterhouse” on the Halfway House album from Harlem-born, New Jersey-raised Joe Budden. They then named the collective after the song.

Now that I can definitively look back at 2011 from the objectively removed scope of 2012, the year in Hip Hop still feels as collectively chaotic now as it did during. Trying to single out an individual who ruled 2011, at this stage in the music industry, is nearly impossible. With so much week-to-week variation on the charts, along with the proliferation of young DIYers, the momentum surrounding Hip Hop artists shifted quicker than ever before. As rising stars like Big K.R.I.T., Kendrick Lamar, and Danny Brown continued their climb, 2011 also brought us standout albums from veterans like Royce Da 5’9, Phonte, and Common, proving that there’s still a place for quality, timeless Hip Hop, even in the midst of a seemingly infinite development of new waves. This doesn’t even touch upon the plethora of introspective and engaging music coming from underground movements around the country.

Every year has this sort of composition though, where a couple of young guys break through and consistent vets hold it down. Instead, 2011 is important because of the immense variation in style and substance of Hip Hop’s most captivating forces. The amount of creativity that came out is encouraging for a genre that in recent years has been considered stale. Some of 2011’s best music came from non-traditional projects like Elzhi’s ELmatic, Danny Brown’s XXX, and The Roots’ concept album, undun. Polarizing figures like A$AP Rocky and Yelawolf garnered critical acclaim, while enigmatic producers like Clams Casino continued to make us scratch our heads with their inventive sounds. The year was filled with these types of examples, none better than two of Hip Hop’s biggest stars, Kanye and Hov, providing perhaps the year’s most discussed album in Watch The Throne.

So what then can we expect in the year to come? It’s easy to predict success for someone like J. Cole, even though I didn’t care for his debut, will undoubtedly be a major presence in the new year, with his pending sophomore follow up. It’s more difficult to tell whether someone like Action Bronson can continue to garner recognition for his strong output and reach new heights. Ultimately, it seems much more likely that 2012 will function eerily similar to 2011 — a variety of new and fascinating (if not lasting) artists that will push traditionalists’ buttons and claim the allegiance of the youth movement, with a handful of big name artists holding down the charts. While I expect Big K.R.I.T. to put out one of the year’s best projects and Kendrick and his Compton cohorts to continue to do their thing, I don’t think we can definitively say that one emcee will be able to lay claim to 2012.

Instead, 2012 promises to be a year comprised of Hip Hop movements. As we saw with the rise of the Bruiser Brigade, A$AP Mob, Odd Future and others in the year past, 2012 will continue Hip Hop’s transition into recognizing what trends will reign supreme, rather than which artist leads the way. We saw this play out among melancholy stars like Drake, The Weeknd, and Frank Ocean, where the audience grew to care less about the individual and more about what the music said about the state of Hip Hop. While at times, 2011 seized our attention with inspired work from great artists, no one emcee or producer can lay claim to owning the year. That’s why 2012 is going to be dominated by the increasing presence of unconventional movements.

Take for example, Michigan’s contribution last year. Consistently overlooked as a region to be reckoned with, Michigan put a huge stamp on 2011 because of its ability to impact on all levels of success. At the top, Eminem and Royce Da 5’9’ put out top-selling albums, underground veterans One Be Lo and Elzhi released two of the highest critically regarded projects of the year, Black Milk and Guilty Simpson teamed up with Sean Price for their well-received Random Axe debut, Jon Connor and Black Opera gained strong momentum, and Danny Brown was responsible for leading a charge that challenged Hip Hop norms and captured the spotlight for a variety of reasons, not always directly related to his musical output. Point being, Michigan made an impact this year because of its versatility and ingenuity with respect to expanding Hip Hop margins.

It seems that 2012 promises to be much of the same, with a variety of new movements taking shape throughout the year, clamoring to have a lasting impact. It’s impossible to tell for certain whether the same guys that pushed the boundaries in 2011 will be at the helm in 2012 or a new wave of experimental artists will take over, but the rapid overturn we’ve witnessed over the past year or two should give us some indication. 2012 will undoubtedly see great music come from big artists and some new breakthrough talents, and I’m certain the underground will continue to push forward with intelligent and forceful rhyming. I’m as interested as anyone to see what post-prison T.I. looks like, whether K.R.I.T. and Lamar can keep climbing upward, and what the G.O.O.D. Music compilation will sound like. More than any of that though, 2012 will be remembered for the myriad subcultures and movements that will at times dominate headlines and help keep Hip Hop changing and adapting.
