It seems like majority of people who visit this blog actually do appreciate these east coast 12 inch compilations, even if the dates/locations are wrong sometimes. I am glad people people seem to like the series regardless of our parasitic, self-aggrandizing dj ‘friend’ who can’t seem to go away. Apparently I am doing way more good than bad here so I suppose it’s worth the effort. As usual there are probably a few mistakes here as far as date/location.

Upcoming: Stretch & Bobbito Month.

That’s right, okay, okay, okay, yo, yo, yo, whoa, ayo, here we go with the flow, Bobbito’s in the house with the mic ya know…
Aight, tune on in ’cause I got some announcements for all you party people. It’s the DJ Stretch Armstrong Show, hosted by Bobbito the Barber a.k.a. Kool Bob Love a.k.a. DJ Cucumberslice a.k.a. the King of Swing, the B-O-B, in the place to be, doin’ his thing on the M-I-C.
Before Fondle ‘Em, CM Famalam, Boogie & the Barber, the B-Side and the Hot 97 XL show, there was a show started by two hip hop heads named Adrian Bartos and Robert Garcia.
Their show, technically Adrian’s show, first started on October 25th, 1990 as The Skinny Bonz Show every other Thug Thursday night / Friday morning at one a.m. ’til five a.m. on Columbia University’s college radio station WKCR, 89-tec-9 FM New York. But it ended November 19th, 1998 as a weekly program called The Stretch Armstrong Show, hosted by Bobbito (the Barber), featuring Lord Sear.
From the promos, exclusives, demos and freestyles (much of which can still only be heard by listening to their shows to this day) to the hilarious phone calls and conversations, this show truly had it all, shit is dumb fly and hot to death.
Colloquially people have called it the Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito Show, Stretch & Bobbito or even just Stretch & Bob. Voted hands down the best hip hop radio show of all time by The Source in ‘98, it was also hilario, never caca and as Stretch Boogie would say: It’s kinda hot. Mad fresh baby pah, it still sounds milk.
Joisus Bobby, it’s Krunchtime! The phones are lighting up, let’s take some calls. The mic is open. KCR?
Yeah what up, I just wanna say if you have cassette tapes of shows to digitize, then get at me cat. Or rather, alternatively, get at one of these cats:
DJ Stretch Armstrong, Nes from Dirty Waters or Verge from Philaflava.
Just write ‘em a line. Any one of those three guys will help you out if you want your tapes digitally converted to MP3 and then returned to you.
Plus you should look out for Stretch & Bobbito month on The T.R.O.Y. Blog starting in one week, October 1st, it’s gonna be celebrating the twentieth anniversary since the very beginning of The Skinny Bonz / Stretch Armstrong Show.
Oh and I wanna give a shout out to Stretch the albino ostrich and say what’s up to my homepiss Bobbito, the funky smellin’ Lord Sear, Neil, Old School Randy Rand, Kurious and the whole Constipated Monkey crew, WKCR, rock rock on…
Word up, good lookin’ out kid. Alright, we’re gonna get back into the music, we got vintage radio from the private collections, so sit back and do the knowledge as we turn up the bass, aight yo, peace.

Concrete Elete – Basic Instructions (1998)
September 14, 2010 - 9:00 am
Tags: concrete elete, Jasiri X, Pittsburgh, stilltown
Posted in Today In Rap | Comments Off

Concrete Elete consisted of Furious Styles, God Gifted, OMG, Chilly Ism, and Evil Man, with Asiatic the Natural on production. A six man wrecking crew that did damage on the Pittsburgh hip-hop scene during the mid-90’s. Members brought their own artistic vision to the knocking instrumentals. In 1998, that vision was expressed through the crew’s debut album, Basic Instructions: Listen… and Repeat.
Basic Instructions was 19 tracks deep, showcasing each MC’s unique approach. Asiatic’s versatile production served as a comfortable home to the rebellious lyrics of Furious Styles, the street savvy rhymes of God Gifted, and the clever wordplay of OMG.
Here to build on the crew’s history is Furious Styles aka Jasiri X.
RW: Peace Jasiri. Describe the foundation upon which Concrete Elete was assembled. How’d you meet and join forces?
JX: We met because I used to buy weed from Chub aka Evil Man. One day he was out of town so he hooked me up with Chill and OMG. We started talking about hip-hop, and that same day we were in me and Asiatic’s studio, and the rest is history.
RW: You collectively finished the Basic Instructions album in 1998. How was it released?
JX: We actually put the album out ourselves, but we didn’t have all the technological means like we do now, so not a lot of people heard it, but it gave us a buzz in Pittsburgh. Everybody called it the Red CD.
RW: Following the release of Basic Instructions, what ultimately led to the disbanding of the crew?
JX: We actually recorded an entire album after Basic Instructions, but we couldn’t agree on the direction. I felt like we should remain underground and other members felt we should make crossover records so we just went our separate ways.
RW: How did the Concrete Elete experience provide groundwork for Jasiri X, the solo MC?
JX: It caused people to know and respect me in the Pittsburgh Hip-Hop scene, so I could still get shows and support as a solo MC. Plus we performed a lot, so it enabled me to learn how to rock a crowd, which is a lost art today.
RW: How do you believe fans can embrace this long lost Concrete Elete album?
JX: To me it still stands up to the test of time, good beats and good lyrics. I’d put us up against a whole lot of groups out today that aren’t half as talented. Also want to send a special shout out to two original Concrete Elete members not on the album, The General and the Black Chinaman.

Up North Tip: Isosceles – Face the Music (1998)
September 13, 2010 - 7:00 am
Tags: album, canadian hip-hop, face the music, isosceles, saskatchewan hip-hop, saskatoon hip-hop, teddy c.d., up north tip
Posted in Today In Rap | Comments Off
Isosceles is a rap trio hailing from–as I’m sure everyone knows–the hip-hop hotbed of Saskatchewan, Canada. Now, here’s an interesting anecdote about the group’s name. Two of the members, emcee Shrimp a.k.a. Agape and disc-jockey Scratchafras are twin brothers. The second emcee, Boya D., is unrelated. Thus an isosceles triangle is formed, as they are two of the same and one different. Clever, right?
After two EPs, the group released their debut album in 1998, titled Face the Music. The music has a fairly unique sound, which I’m sure is exactly what they were going for. I have not listened to this record enough times to write a completely comprehensive review, but from what I’ve heard so far I kind of dig it. Not to focus too much on their ethnicity but the rappers are clearly white by their sound, and for a record like this that’s not a bad thing at all–rather, it adds a kind of credibility to their songs. They are who they are; these aren’t posers. The lyrics are intelligent, often poetic and well thought-out. But make sure you listen to their flows with an open-mind. It’s nothing otherworldly different but it might take some getting used to.
For me, one of the best parts of the album has to be the production. From the opening instrumental track “I Once Knew You,” to “Clean Slate,” “Livin’ In Rekord” and “Bio Organic Youth (feat. Ancient),” the production contains an array of ambient and contemplative jazz samples, soulful drums, and additional layers of esoteric vocal samples that add color to each song. The scratching on this album is also very nice to listen to.
Sample Tracks:
So, again I will be posting samples via Youtube links (aside from one song) because DivShare is being a major pain in the ass right now. I have yet to renew my premium account so I suppose it’s insinuating I should do so. By freezing Mozilla whenever I try to upload a song… Cot dayum.

I used to live in Saskatoon for four years as a kid, the same city Isosceles is from, and I can safely say that for anyone to spend the majority of their life in that city and still drop an album this good is something that deserves recognition. The land is completely flat. The city is built on Western Canadian prairie that, once frozen or blanketed in snow, never melts until spring–sludge-filled spring at that. The winters often dip well into the minus-30s and 40s (degrees Celsius). Black people are scarce–hell, there isn’t even a formal Chinatown. My grade seven teacher spent his summers and winter holidays tending his family farm (on the outskirts of town) for eighteen hours a day, reading novels on his tractor as he drove through acres upon acres of vast and desolate agricultural land. But believe it or not, there is civilization and modern housing built on these prairies, and a city does in fact exist. I know, right?
I’m exaggerating of course. I make it sound like No Man’s Land, but Saskatoon is actually quite nice. Not a bad place by any means–I definitely enjoyed my stay and it marked an important turning point for my family–but finding local hip-hop gems in the post-2000 world of synths on steroids is like looking for a needle in a hay stack. Thank God for the Internet. And yes, some of my old friends are Rihanna fans.
All in all, Isosceles’ Face the Music is a good debut and definitely worth a listen. Not everyone’s cup of tea I’m sure, but if you give it a chance you might find yourself pleasantly surprised, and rewarded. I don’t think the artists would want it any other way.
Note: Props to dalek at the Official Canadian Hip-Hop Thread on Philaflava for bringing this album and group to my attention, as well as the Beatbox Radio Show blog for the original rip. Enjoy, and let me know what you guys think.
Peace,
— Teddy C.D.
